Botswana’s Gambling Authority has appointed Moruntshi Kemorwale as its substantive Chief Executive Officer after almost a year leading the regulator on an acting basis.
Tiroeaone Ntsima, Minister of Trade & Entrepreneurship, approved the appointment.
Kemorwale joined the Authority when it was established in 2016 and has held several senior positions, including Chief of Staff. His responsibilities have covered strategic planning, organisational performance, stakeholder engagement and responsible gambling programmes.
Plato Gaoboi, Gambling Authority Board Chair, said: “The Board is confident that Mr Kemorwale’s institutional knowledge, strategic acumen and commitment to responsible gambling will steer the Authority toward greater impact.”
The appointment comes as Botswana seeks to strengthen oversight of a gambling market that includes casinos, sports betting, lotteries and limited payout machines. Kemorwale has also set out plans to reduce the Authority’s reliance on government funding by improving revenue collection and building a more financially sustainable regulatory model.
Licensed operators are required to pay a levy based on GGR, with the Authority historically collecting 10% into the country’s gambling levy fund. The regulator also oversees responsible gambling contributions and other licence related payments.
Botswana continues to expand responsible gambling outreach, including mobile clinics intended to provide information about gambling related harm and available support. Kemorwale’s confirmation provides leadership continuity as the Authority develops its licensing, enforcement and player protection functions.
