Chess is set to make its esports debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup, scheduled for July 31st to August 2nd in Boulevard City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, raising questions about the classic game’s ability to captivate an audience accustomed to fast-paced titles such as Valorant and Dota 2.

While chess has successfully transitioned into the digital age, thanks to platforms like Chess.com and streaming services like Twitch, its slower pace compared to traditional esports could pose a challenge.

To address this, organisers have adopted a 10+0 Rapid Format, where each player has 10 minutes with no additional time per move, ensuring a more dynamic experience that keeps spectators engaged.

This prestigious inaugural tournament will feature 16 players, including renowned figures like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, competing for a Prize Pool of $1,500,000.

Industry experts acknowledge potential hurdles, highlighting that quick match times, engaging commentary and the inclusion of popular players are crucial for maintaining viewer interest. Enhancing the broadcast with effects and streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube can also broaden its appeal.

The 2025 Esports World Cup presents a pivotal opportunity for chess to prove its viability within the esports arena. Success would lead to more tournaments and larger prizes, attracting a new generation of fans.

While differing from traditional esports, chess’s unique strategic depth might just be its greatest asset.
