October 4th saw US giant, DraftKings, close its UK daily fantasy offering, with users of its app receiving emails notifying them that the product was being pulled from the UK with immediate effect.
Users were also advised that they may withdraw funds after October 4th, with in-game currencies like Crowns and DK Dollars converted into US dollars.
A DraftKings spokesperson said: ”This decision was made as part of our ongoing efforts to optimise our business.
“Moving forward, we will continue to focus on growth and delivering value in other key markets, including US sports betting.”
DraftKings launched in the UK in February 2016, subsequently expanding into Malta, Germany, Austria and Australia in 2023.
Whether or not this seemingly backward step for the company comes as a great surprise is debatable, given that both FanDuel and Yahoo endured short-lived forays into the UK market, ceasing operations way back in 2016 and 2018, respectively.
