DraftKings has announced plans to launch its online sportsbook and casino products in Alberta, subject to regulatory approval, as the province prepares for the introduction of a regulated open market.
The operator said it is targeting Alberta’s anticipated market opening on July 13th, as set by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. If approved, the move would mark DraftKings’ second active province in Canada, alongside Ontario, and its 34th jurisdiction across North America.
The planned entry comes at a strategically significant moment, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted across North America, creating a major acquisition window for operators entering newly regulated markets.
Greg Karamitis, Executive VP & General Manager of Sports at DraftKings, says: “We are excited about the opportunity to expand our footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta.
“With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup, it is a particularly strong moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
Alberta is widely viewed as the next major battleground in Canada’s evolving iGaming landscape, with a competitive licensing framework expected to mirror elements of Ontario’s open market model. For operators, early positioning ahead of launch is likely to prove critical in securing market share.
DraftKings confirmed that eligible customers in Alberta will be able to pre-register ahead of launch, signalling a familiar playbook focused on early database acquisition and brand visibility.
The company adds that responsible gaming will remain central to its offering, with tools and controls designed to support player protection and regulatory compliance as it enters the province.
Full product details are expected to be confirmed closer to launch, pending final regulatory approvals.
