English football’s Premier League has voted to ban sponsorship of its clubs’ shirt fronts, with effect from the end of the 2025/26 season.
There are currently eight Premier League clubs with gambling companies as shirt-front sponsors, Bournemouth (Dafabet), Brentford (Hollywoodbets), Everton (Stake), Fulham (W88), Leeds (SBOTOP), Newcastle (Fun88), Southampton (Sportsbet) and West Ham (Betway). The combined annual value of these sponsorship deals is estimated to be around £60m.
Clubs will be able to continue to feature gambling brands in other areas, including the players’ shirt sleeves and the LED perimeter boards around pitches.
UK Culture Secretary, Lucy Frazer, says: “While the vast majority of adults enjoy gambling without harm, we cannot ignore the fact that footballers are massive role models to kids.
“Our upcoming Gambling White Paper will upgrade punter protections and do more to protect those at risk of addiction.”
