On Wednesday December 28th, at approximately midnight, a fire broke out at Grand Diamond City, a casino in the western Cambodian town of Krong Poi Pet, on the border with Thailand.

Cambodian authorities have now confirmed the deaths of 27 people, with a further 112 reportedly suffering injuries as a result of the blaze in the 17-storey complex.

Poipet City Governor, Keat Hul, has stated that many of the deaths were caused by smoke inhalation or people leaping from the building to avoid the blaze, which burned for over five hours.

The deceased included victims from Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal, Malaysia and China, and Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, called the incident “a tragedy at the end of the year.”
