Voters in Liechtenstein have rejected a proposed ban on casinos in a referendum that divided the tiny principality’s 40,000 residents.

Sometimes known as ‘the Las Vegas of the Alps’, the microstate has six casinos. Opponents argued that gambling addiction and damage to the reputation of the wealthy nation were problem issues. However, 73% of those who voted rejected the proposed ban.

Hans-Adam II, the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, joined the government in describing the country’s gambling industry as an important source of income, arguing that a ban was too drastic a measure to address problems like gambling addiction.
