Macau is targeting conference and exhibition bookings to bring more business into its casino resorts, with financial support for organisers and overseas promotion involving all six concessionaires.

Che Weng Keong, Macau’s investment promotion chief, said the territory wanted to become a “business city” at Fortune’s Leaders Forum on 8 September.

The government’s third five-year development plan, published on 18 August, targets non-gaming sectors contributing approximately 60% of GDP by 2030.

The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) markets more than 240,000 sq m of event space across Macau, highlighting resorts that combine meeting facilities, accommodation, restaurants, retail and entertainment. Venetian Macao and Galaxy International Convention Center are among the venues available to organisers.

IPIM’s existing Convention and Exhibition Stimulation Programme provides financial support for events in Macau, including those staged jointly with venues in the neighbouring Hengqin cooperation zone in mainland China. The agency also helps organisers complete administrative procedures and arrange activities in local communities.

All six resort groups are offering travel promotions in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia as part of a wider government campaign to expand international visitor markets. An eight-day official mission to the three countries concluded on 5 September, bringing together tourism, conference and exhibition businesses alongside other sectors.

Macau’s tourism office signed cooperation agreements with travel industry associations in all three markets and Malaysia’s tourism promotion board. IPIM’s account of the mission also details promotional partnerships with an airline, travel agencies and online travel platforms.

IPIM is working with the six resort groups on itineraries for conference and exhibition visitors that include local restaurants, historic districts and team activities, encouraging delegates to spend time and money beyond their event venues.
