Prediction markets continue to experience a surge in activity and interest, driven by recent moves from major companies.
Crypto.com has launched a sports-focused app called OG, while Coinbase expanded its offerings with Kalshi markets. The landscape is further enriched by sports and financial sectors embracing prediction markets.
OG is a standalone app aimed at sports enthusiasts, aligning Crypto.com with the broader trend of companies entering the prediction markets space.
Kris Marszalek, Co-founder & CEO of Crypto.com, says: “We have experienced 40x weekly growth in our prediction market business over the last six months. Our goal is to establish OG as the premier sports prediction market technology with the best customer experience.”
Notably, Hyperliquid and Cboe exchanges are also venturing into these markets, signalling a growing interest from both the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) and Traditional Finance (TradFi) sectors.
Coinbase’s full launch of Kalshi markets marks another significant step. This follows Jupiter’s integration of Polymarket markets on the Solana Exchange, emphasising the rapid pace of developments in the industry. These initiatives demonstrate a clear commitment to prediction markets, which are becoming increasingly integrated into various platforms.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is playing a pivotal role. Chairman, Michael Selig, says: “It is time for clear rules and a clear understanding that the CFTC supports lawful innovation in these markets.”
This endorsement is crucial as it encourages responsible development and highlights the regulator’s support for innovation in the sector.
The range of companies entering prediction markets is vast, spanning sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel, fantasy sports platforms like PrizePicks and financial exchanges such as CME Group. Additionally, crypto platforms like Metamask and Phantom are joining the fray, indicating widespread industry interest. While there are legal challenges, the commitment from major players suggests a strong belief in the potential. Intercontinental Exchange’s $2bn investment in Polymarket underscores this confidence, reflecting the broader enthusiasm for these markets.
The sector’s growth is undeniable, with more companies likely to enter, and this momentum suggests that prediction markets are not merely a fleeting trend but a significant development in the gambling and financial industries.
