South Korean authorities have completed an investigation into six payment firms accused of enabling illegal gambling. Despite possibly unintentional involvement, these firms face consequences under South Korea’s stringent gambling laws.

The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), South Korea’s financial regulatory body, revealed that these firms provided digital and payment infrastructure, inadvertently facilitating criminal organizations in their operations involving sports and casino gambling.

The FSS state: “Illegal gambling has evolved into a sophisticated digital operation. We will strengthen cooperation with prosecutors and push for legislative changes to close regulatory gaps exploited by these platforms.”

The accused firms facilitated transactions between illegal operators and their customers, thereby supporting illicit activities. The FSS suggest that not all issues were accidental, with some payment gateways knowingly enabling scams and illegal gambling. One firm, for instance, allegedly facilitated voice phishing scams and operated a sports betting platform disguised as an e-commerce site.

Authorities employed advanced monitoring and tracking technologies to identify and prosecute these firms.

The crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat illegal gambling, particularly targeting teenagers and young people. Authorities are concerned that criminal enterprises are deliberately targeting this demographic, with reports of children as young as 12 being exposed to illegal gambling.
