The Swedish government intends to enhance gambling safety by expanding its ban on credit card use for gambling. Following a legislative council review, amendments to the Gambling Act propose a prohibition on credit card payments for online gaming, effective April 2026. This measure builds on the existing credit ban for land-based gambling.
The proposed amendments require operators to refrain from accepting bets if they know a player is using credit to finance their gambling. Additionally, operators must not process credit card payments when it is clear that a credit card is being used. This will apply to both online and in-store transactions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to curbing the use of borrowed money in gambling activities.
Exemptions to the ban may be granted by the regulator for certain operators who hold a license for public benefit purposes. This allows some flexibility within the strict framework, ensuring that operators serving a greater public good can continue their operations under specific conditions.
The legislative changes are scheduled to come into effect on April 1st, 2026, giving operators ample time to adjust to the new requirements.
A spokesperson for Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, says: “This step is crucial for the protection of consumers against the risks associated with gambling on credit.
“It aligns with our broader goal of ensuring the gambling market operates sustainably and safely.”
