Slotegrator has recently turned its attention to Africa’s burgeoning betting market. According to their latest report, the continent is witnessing a significant surge in growth, fuelled by the rapid adoption of mobile technology, a predominantly young, digital-savvy population and enhancing regulatory frameworks.

Projections suggest that Africa’s iGaming sector will reach US$17.63bn in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.23% from 2025 to 2029, establishing it as one of the fastest-expanding markets worldwide.

Mobile & Football: Africa’s winning combination

Sports betting, particularly football, dominates Africa’s betting landscape. The proliferation of mobile devices has been central to this growth, offering millions easy access to betting platforms.

Kenya leads with 88% of gamblers using mobile devices, followed closely by Ghana at 70% and Tanzania with its unique low-stakes, high-volume model. Nigeria, boasting over 60 million daily bettors, underscores the significance of mobile access.

The key markets driving growth are South Africa (GGR US$3.4bn) for 2023/24; Nigeria (revenues anticipated to hit US$3.63bn in 2025; Kenya (83.9% of adults involved in gambling); Ghana (projected revenues of $57.42m); Tanzania (projected to grow from $9.8m in 2025 to $15m in 2029); and Uganda (strong public interest and governmental backing).

Emerging trends in Africa

Four key trends have been identified by Slotegrator as shaping Africa’s iGaming future: a Mobile-First approach, regulatory enhancement, economic growth and fintech innovations, as platforms like M-Pesa (Kenya) and Tigo Pesa (Tanzania) transform transaction methods.

Local strategies for success

Ataur Abeer, Slotegrator’s Sales Manager, emphasises the necessity for tailored, localised strategies. Operators must develop lightweight mobile apps, partner with local fintech entities and understand regional sports and betting preferences while adhering to evolving regulatory landscapes.

Slotegrator’s analysis affirms Africa’s iGaming market is not merely expanding but thriving, offering global brands a unique blend of opportunities.
