Botswana stands out as a leading example in responsible gambling regulation, balancing industry growth with player protection. The country’s legal framework and governmental support have been pivotal in establishing Botswana as a model for others.

Portia Diteko, Responsible Gambling Manager at the Botswana Gambling Authority, has been instrumental in this progress, and speaking to Focus Gaming News, she highlighted the strength of Botswana’s legal framework, which includes a 3.5% levy on licensees for funding responsible gambling initiatives.

This levy supports programs aimed at minimizing gambling-related harm. Diteko emphasizes the importance of government backing, stating that having leaders interested in both gaming and responsible gambling has been invaluable.

Before implementing any responsible gambling measures, the Authority conducts thorough research to ensure initiatives are appropriate for local conditions.

Diteko points out that responsible gambling is not anti-gambling, but rather a way to ensure the industry’s sustainability by preventing addiction. Educating licensees on this point helps them understand that responsible gambling supports business growth by maintaining a healthy customer base.

One successful campaign, Motshameko o Phepa (The Game is Fine), aims to shift public perception and educate communities about responsible gambling practices. The campaign addresses misconceptions, such as viewing gambling as a source of income, and instead promotes gambling as a form of entertainment.

And Dreams before Dices, a sub-campaign, targets youth, encouraging them to pursue their dreams before engaging in gambling.

Collaborations with industry stakeholders are also crucial. The Authority conducts Responsible Gambling First Aid Training for licensees’ employees, equipping them to identify early signs of gambling problems. Periodic consultative forums allow licensees to provide feedback and suggestions on policies, fostering a cooperative environment.

Portia Diteko believes that Botswana can serve as a model for other regional regulators. She suggests that clear legal frameworks and evidence-based practices are essential. Understanding cultural nuances, such as the stigma around gambling, allows for tailored interventions.

Looking to the future, Diteko is optimistic about the industry’s growth. Botswana is revising its legal framework to adapt to new technologies and trends, such as online gambling and artificial intelligence. The gambling sector is becoming an integral part of Botswana’s economic diversification strategy, especially as traditional industries face challenges.

By requiring foreign applicants to partner with local citizens and emphasizing corporate social investment, Botswana ensures that the benefits of industry growth are shared by its people. The country’s efforts continue to set a benchmark for others in the region.
