As they compete for the six licenses up for review in Macau, seven casino operators are expected to invest around MOP100bn (Patacas) in the Chinese special administrative region over the next 10 years, equivalent to more than US$12bn.

The seven applicants are incumbents Galaxy Entertainment, Melco Resorts, MGM China, Sands China, SJM Holdings and Wynn Macau, plus new entrant Genting Malaysia.

The Genting application is very credible, and the potential removal of one of the existing licence holders would represent a huge shakeup.

Current licence concessions expire at the end of this year, with the new licences effective for the 10-year period from 2023-33.
