Mississippi legislators have once again failed to pass Bills on mobile sports betting and sweepstakes casinos due to an ongoing divide between the House and Senate.
This legislative impasse has resulted in both measures failing to advance before a crucial deadline, echoing a similar situation from 2025.
Mississippi House House Bill 1581 aimed to legalise mobile sports betting, while Senate Bill 2104 sought to ban sweepstakes casinos. However, neither Bill was reported out of Committee by the March 3rd deadline, leading to their automatic expiration for the 2026 session. This continues Mississippi’s limited legal sports betting, which is restricted to licensed casinos.
House Bill 1581 was passed by the House with an 85-31 vote on February 4th. However, like in previous years, it stalled in the Senate Committee. In response, Rep. Casey Eure introduced another measure, House Bill 4074, with new provisions to address Senate concerns, including tax adjustments and fewer licenses. This too failed to receive a committee vote before the deadline.
Senate Bill 2104 passed in the Senate, aiming to prohibit online sweepstakes casinos. Despite Senate approval, also on February 4th, it did not advance in the House, leading to its demise in committee. This mirrored the legislative stalemate seen in 2025, with the House pushing for expanded sports betting and the Senate resisting changes beyond casino premises.
The divide between the chambers is clear, with Rep. Eure advocating for sports betting as a funding source for the state’s underfunded Public Employees’ Retirement System. On the other hand, Sen. David Blount, a vocal critic of mobile sports betting, argues it could harm the state’s retail casino industry.
As this legislative deadlock persists, Mississippi’s gambling framework remains unchanged. However, the passage of each Bill in one chamber suggests lawmakers’ interest in advancing these proposals. Resolving the House-Senate divide will be crucial for any future progress.
