Sega Sammy Holdings has reported a net loss for the year ended March 31st, 2026, after impairment charges linked to recent acquisitions weighed on the Japanese entertainment and gaming group.
The company posted a net loss of JPY5.76bn, compared with a profit of JPY45bn in the previous financial year, despite a 13.7% increase in group sales to JPY487.5bn.
The result was driven largely by impairment losses of approximately JPY32bn related to Rovio Entertainment, the mobile games business best known for Angry Birds, and around JPY18bn on goodwill connected to Stakelogic, the Dutch iGaming supplier acquired by Sega Sammy in 2025.
The Stakelogic impairment is significant because the acquisition was intended to strengthen Sega Sammy’s position in online casino content. The deal, completed for €125m, gave the group access to a European iGaming supplier with slot, live casino and platform capabilities. However, changes in the Dutch market, including tighter player protection measures and deposit restrictions, have placed pressure on local operators and suppliers. Sega Sammy say it is restructuring Stakelogic, including downsizing parts of the business and narrowing its development pipeline.
The company has also moved to pause large scale mergers and acquisitions while it reassesses its investment strategy. Funds previously earmarked for strategic investment are being redirected towards a share buyback programme.
Sega Sammy has revised its medium-term targets, cutting its adjusted EBITDA target for the period to FY2027 from more than JPY230bn to JPY142.5bn. It has also reduced its target return on equity from more than 10% to 6.5%. These results underline the risks facing diversified entertainment groups as they expand into regulated online gambling markets, where growth opportunities remain attractive, but compliance costs and market conditions can shift quickly.
There was a stronger performance from Paradise Sega Sammy, the company’s equity method affiliate in South Korea and operator of the Paradise City integrated resort. Paradise City reported record sales in 2025, supported by higher casino revenue and stronger demand from Japanese VIP customers. Earnings contribution from the resort rose to JPY4.5bn, helped by improved operations and tax related benefits. The planned conversion of an adjacent hotel into the Hyatt Regency Incheon Paradise City is expected to support further expansion of the resort’s customer base.
The group is also seeking growth in the US social casino market by moving Sega Sammy Creation titles online. This strategy points to a more selective approach after a period of acquisition led expansion.
For Sega Sammy, the immediate priority is no longer dealmaking at scale but extracting value from existing assets while restoring confidence in a gaming division affected by underperforming acquisitions and changing regulation.
