Thailand is set to build a US$100bn entertainment complex, promising strict regulation and a significant boost to GDP and tourist spending.

The project aims to compete with Singapore’s casinos, enhance Thailand’s tourism appeal and address seasonal visitor decline.

Thailand’s government has announced plans for a world-class entertainment complex, which will include strictly regulated casino facilities to transform the nation into a global tourism hub.

Suksit Srijomkwan, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, describes the ‘Thailand Entertainment Complex’ as a strategic initiative to elevate tourism revenue while confronting seasonal downturns, adding: “A dedicated indoor stadium would resolve issues such as the recurring THB6m (US$184,000) cost of re-turfing Rajamangala Stadium after each event.”

The project, led by Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat, requires a minimum investment of THB100bn ($3bn) from operators. It will feature exhibition centres, concert venues, museums, water parks and amusement parks, inspired by global leaders like Disney.

Additional facilities will include high-end restaurants and business incubation hubs.

The government stresses that casino operations will be tightly regulated, with no connection to online gambling.

Suksit Srijomkwan states: “It is not a ‘free casino’ or ‘liberalized gambling’ project.”

The project is expected to generate THB12.04bn ($370m) to THB39.25bn ($1.2bn) in annual revenue, supporting education, public health and community development.

With legislators set to discuss the new draft law for casinos and entertainment complexes in July, Julapun Amornvivat emphasizes the need for a comprehensive law to prevent negative impact.

He expressed confidence in the Entertainment Complex Bill’s passage, adding: “The government is not concerned that the law will not be approved by Parliament, as it was proposed by the Cabinet, which holds the majority in Parliament.”

The project is anticipated to create up to 10,000 direct jobs, with potential for more. Discussions are ongoing with global developers like Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts, with expectations for Thailand to become a leading entertainment complex destination.
