Cybersecurity specialists, Kaspersky, have highlighted a dramatic increase in gaming-related cyberthreats across Southeast Asia, with an 86% surge in cyberattacks in the latter half of 2025.

Malaysia experienced a rise of 21.3%, while Thailand and Vietnam saw even steeper increases, at 104.4% and 202.5%, respectively.

Cybercriminals in the region are increasingly targeting young gamers by masquerading malware and fraudulent tools as in-game enhancements like cheats and mods. Popular games such as Roblox, Minecraft and Genshin Impact are particularly vulnerable, as players often download unofficial content to customize their gaming experiences.

These downloads can lead to significant risks, including stolen personal information, compromised devices and financial losses.

Kaspersky notes that the impact of these threats extends beyond individual players. Youngsters may inadvertently expose sensitive household information, such as payment details or home addresses, through shared family devices.

Choon Hong Chee, Head of Consumer Channel for APAC at Kaspersky, says: “Gaming-related cyberthreats are becoming more aggressive as cybercriminals exploit children’s digital habits and excitement around online games.”

Kaspersky emphasise the importance of digital safety practices within families, recommending avoiding untrusted downloads, conducting regular device scans and fostering cybersecurity awareness from an early age.

As the gaming landscape evolves, both players and guardians need to remain vigilant against these threats. By taking proactive steps, families can safeguard their digital environments and protect against the increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by cybercriminals.

Kaspersky’s warning serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing battle against cyberthreats in the digital gaming world.
