Meta Platforms is reportedly developing a new standalone app called Arena, aimed at entering the prediction market space.
This app, personally directed by Mark Zuckerberg, will allow users to forecast future events. Initially, it will feature a points-based system, with potential plans for real-money betting in the future.
Arena is being designed as a separate smartphone app rather than integrating into existing platforms like Facebook or Instagram and is modelled after existing prediction market platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket, which have seen significant growth. Users will be able to make predictions on various topics, including politics, sports and economics.
The decision to develop Arena comes as prediction markets experience explosive growth. Meta sees this as an opportunity to enhance user engagement and capitalize on its vast distribution network, potentially directing users from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
This is not Meta’s first foray into prediction markets. During the pandemic, it experimented with a project called Forecast, which did not gain significant traction. Arena represents a more ambitious effort to establish a foothold in this burgeoning sector.
However, questions remain. A points-based system is easier to manage, but incorporating real-money trading could pose regulatory challenges. Meta’s existing user base offers a distribution advantage, but it will face competition from established players like Kalshi and Polymarket, who already have regulatory approvals and institutional support.
The emergence of Arena coincides with reports of Kalshi’s fundraising at a valuation near $40bn. If Meta seriously enters the prediction market space, it could both validate the sector and introduce formidable competition. For now, Arena is an experimental project with no confirmed launch date, and Meta is yet to publicly comment on the reports.
