Limited trading activity has been noted on the Winter Olympics markets at Kalshi, with just $17m in trading volume recorded. Over the past week, these markets have comprised only 0.6% of total trading activity, indicating a lack of interest compared to other sports events such as NBA games.

Vlad Tenev, CEO at Robinhood, previously expressed optimism, saying: “I think we are just at the beginning of a prediction market super cycle that could drive trillions in annual volume over time.

“This year is going to be a big year. Olympics are going on right now.”

The reality has proven otherwise, especially beyond the major ice hockey games. Olympic event contracts remain a minor component of overall betting volume. This lack of interest underscores a need for those in the sports betting industry to better understand market dynamics.

While Olympic medal counts and hockey draw some attention, curling stands out as Kalshi’s largest Olympic market, although it remains small. This niche interest highlights the varied preferences of bettors who largely favour more mainstream and predictable sports events.

Despite the initial expectations for high engagement in Olympic betting markets, actual trading activity has not met these forecasts. The focus remains on more popular sports, signalling a learning curve for industry leaders to adjust their strategies and expectations in understanding betting trends and consumer interests.
