US President Donald Trump stands to gain substantially if Bally’s Corporation successfully secures one of New York’s highly sought-after casino licences.

The agreement revolves around Trump’s former golf course, at Ferry Point in the Bronx, with a potential payout of $115m at stake.

Bally’s acquired the operational rights to the publicly owned 18-hole golf course from the Trump Organisation for US$60m in 2023. A key provision of this agreement, known as a Gaming Event Fee, mandates an additional non-refundable payment of $115m should Bally’s secure the licence to develop a casino on the property.

Details of this arrangement surfaced during ongoing court proceedings involving allegations of asset-value misrepresentation against Trump.

Richard Forsyth, industry analyst, explains: “The arrangement highlights the complex and often controversial interplay between real estate, politics and gaming regulation.

“New York’s casino selection process, always intensely competitive, now carries heightened political sensitivity.”

The New York State Gaming Commission is supervising the licensing process, attracting bids from giants such as Caesars Entertainment and Hudson’s Bay Company, owner of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Trump’s involvement introduces an additional dimension of scrutiny, potentially complicating the decision-making process given his polarising reputation among New York policymakers.

Laura Simmons, specialist in gaming law, adds: “This development undoubtedly places increased pressure on regulators. Transparency and fairness in the licensing process will be closely monitored, given the significant political implications.”

The decision on the casino licences is expected by the end of this year. For Bally’s, securing the licence would provide a major strategic advantage in one of America’s most profitable gaming markets, while for President Trump, the potential financial reward underscores the intricate relationship between high-stakes business ventures and public policy in the gambling industry.
